I love my chickens. Really I do, but these last couple of weeks have been testing. LOL.
First Blah died. She was our oldest and most loved chicken. She was 5 years old. She was one of the first chickens we ever had. She hatched 3 sets of eggs and was Daniels special chook. Her name came about because at the time of getting her, all he could say was 'blah' and thus it was it. It was a very sad day that she left us.
(This is a photo from the day we first got our bantams 1st April 2008. Blah is the black one at the front, she was sisters with Pinochio the grey one and Goldilocks, the white speckled one).
Then we decided to help one of our neigbours so we are babysitting his 3 beautiful bantams.
Well, I went away for the weekend and the family tells me Michaels chooks have disappeared, but
ours are all there.
I go to look first thing Monday morning. No, Michaels are all there. But not all of ours are.
Michael rings to tell me, there’s a brown chicken on his lawn. Could it be ours?
Yes. So at low tide, he shushes it along the mud, onto our property and coaxs it up the hill. He rings me to tell me it’s heading North.
I go and find her and coax her back into their large fenced area.
All good.
But there is still one of ours missing. It’s Lucky. We called her Lucky as she was attached by a cat a week or so ago and after some tender love and care, she survived. I fear she has been gotten by the cats again as it’s now Wed and she still isn’t here.
Then we notice Michaels ones aren't around. Where could they be? We find out this morning, Michael's have gone walk about. Ann, our lovely next door neighour sees two of them on a lawn in the house next to them. We go to fetch them, but they escape through a hedge onto another property. I knock on the door to gain access to said property to try and catch them. But noone is home and I don’t know these people. So we go home. Chickens are still awandering around.
So as of right now, we are down 4 chickens (5 including Blah).
And I’m supposed to love this right?!
Honestly, you can imagine the fun this neighbourhood has watching us chase chickens around at 7.30 in the morning. You've just gotta laugh.
PS: While I was looking for photos of Blah, I came across this one of Toast and Chickenee. It's one I often talk about as it was a 'stand off' between the two of them. They stood looking at each other like this for maybe a minute, before Toast gave up and walked off. Chickens 1, Toast nil.
Cute last pic... Love the story/saga, of searching and chasing, or should it be search and rescue what a mission, does this mean you are going to have to make a bigger better fenced area? Sorry that you lost blah you been having a time of it lately huh.

You don't exactly present a compelling argument FOR chickens at this point:( hope some of your chooks return to the fold soon.
