Movies

As a treat I took the kids to the movies this morning. We saw Horton Hears a Who. They have the book here at home, so know how it goes and must've heard about the movie at daycare. I thought this might be an ok movie for them. That surely there couldn't be any scary bits in it. But boy was I wrong!

The trailors for a start scared them out of their seats! LOL. Poor wee things. Especially Ice Age 3 with the big dinosaur. My goodness!

But then I assured them it would be ok cause the actual movie was starting. Well that was fine for about 2 seconds and then this little thing started rolling and the music was quite daunting and it all got too much for them. Dan starts crying, Matt starts screaming. Sarahs hiding behind me - how did that happen?! It was not a good start. I covered Dan's eyes and he immediately subsided and then I tried to tell Sarah and Matt that its ok, they know what happens in the book and its the same in the movie and that really its all fun. Which was then fine up until that awful eagle came into it.

Honestly, I thought I was doing the right thing but I should've known that my kids are just scared of movies. The simplest of movies like this and they are still terrified.

Still we got to the end with our home made popcorn spilt everywhere, museli bars squished into little balls in their hands and big sighs of relief that we were now going home. LOL!

I guess it shows that they are still very innocent, which I can't say I'm sad about. They can hang onto that childhood innocence as long as possible in my opinion!

So after thinking I might have an easy morning, its turned into quite an emotional one and I'm feeling quite shattered. LOL!

Thought I'd share a couple of cards I did for SBO last week. Very simple, but using just one piece of double sided pp and making the same one, just a reverse version of the pp.

I like to leave the sentiment off until I use a card, that way I can make it fit a particular occassion. Tricky huh?

I hope you had a good weekend. We did even in the yukky weather. Even this morning its been really foggy, right up til about half an hour ago. Amazing. I even went for a walk in it this morning. Was a nice way to start the day actually. I'd forgotten about that.

Saturday sketch day

All day yesterday I felt like I'd missed something on my blog. Like I should have done something. Then I figured it out....cause Andy was home it felt like Sat even though it was Friday. Thankfully it was just me, and today is Saturday and I hadn't missed anything. LOL.

I've actually done this sketch for the new dare at No 8 Wired and was prompted by the BOM prompts over at the Fiskars blog (what have you learnt in the last 5 years).

This afternoon I'm off to my nieces birthday. Happy birthday Kathryn. The kids are so looking forward to it. They just adore their cousins and to hang out with them is even better.

Then this evening we're off to a friends for dinner. Just us, no kids. Can't wait. Debs and I have known each other for years and have become close again over the last few years as we had children a month apart and are now working together on Connect Cafe. We have a lot of laughs together, a few tears and many secrets. Our husbands get on too and so its easy. I can't wait!

Anzac Day

We've had a big day over at the Fiskars blog today. Lots of memories, and information about Anzac Day. How was your Anzac day? Do you have traditions surrounding it? I had big plans of going to the dawn parade, but I think I've mentioned how tired I've been lately and last night was no different so I decided to sleep instead.

Actually that's why I've been missing in action a bit lately. The tiredness seems to have drained any mojo from me. LOL! Bummer! And I've had nothing to say. Yep, I know unbelieveable, but true. So anyway, I thought I might come on now and say g'day and I haven't forgotten about my stories here, but just needed some time to chill out.

Something else I haven't forgotten about is the rak I mentioned here...I am committed to giving this book away and as there were only two people who left comments about ideas on how we personally can change the world, I decided to give them each a copy. Yep, Carol and Cindy can you please send me your addy details and I'll get the book out to you asap (email addy in top left sidebar).

Ok, now I just have to have a little rave about my hubby. He is the best. We don't have the normal conventional marriage in that he helps out a lot more than males did in the past. For that I am eternally grateful. But the other day he went the extra mile and brought me home some flowers. Some beautiful pink/purple tulips. Our wedding flowers. Just because. I have put them in a vase beside the computer and get to see them lots cause of this. He is worth his weight in gold that man! Love him to bits.

Ok, off to create. I need to do some stuff for show on SBO tomorrow. Have a great Friday night. I'm gonna watch Project runway while I work. yay! Love that show.

Childrens shops? We hit them all....

Except Pumpkin Patch. We went up to Glenfield as there was Farmers, T&T, JK, The Warehouse and Cotton on Kids all there. And I could get my car valleted at the same time (lazy huh?!). And we shopped and shopped and shopped. I think we brought something at every single store! And we got most of the shopping done. But we still needed Matts rugby boots so we went up to Albany where we found them, plus some slippers for Matt and some run around shoes for Sarah.

Dan's slippers we had got earlier and well they are a story all of their own.... At the moment Dan's favourite word is truck. I think I've mentioned this before. Every time we go past a truck in the car he shouts it out. Every time we see scoria, dirt, wood he screams out truck (cause that's what delivers those things!). Every time we go to the front gate he shouts truck (cause thats where the truck comes to), and every time he wants to tell us about something he points to the front gate, the truck going past or whatever and tells us about the truck he sees/remembers. Its just his thing for now.

So I just about keeled over when we saw slippers with a truck on the front in his size! Of course from then on, there was no other option and we promptly put them in the trolley and carried on. This morning, of course, the first thing he wants to do is put on his truck slippers and refuses to take them off to put on his shoes to go out. After a bit of persuassion and assurances he can put them back on when he comes home, we manage to get them off. But only because hes allowed to put on his brand new trainers. LOL!

I tell you these kids are smart now a days. He's not even two!

And going along the 'he's not even two' storyline..... Over the weekend I gave away a heap of clothes to charity and got out all Matts clothes for Dan. I couldn't believe it this morning when I put them on thinking they'd be way too big just now and the trousers fit perfectly and the tops sleeves are ever so slightly too short (size 2 from PP). I can see we're going to be putting him in size 3's before you know it! Scary stuff. I mean I know he's a big boy, but crikey!

Sarah was so good yesterday. She pretty much chose all her outfits (with some guided direction - 'hey Sarah do you like this?' Nodding head as I say it). We quickly found a 'rule' that worked. If she liked it we didn't buy it. If she LOVED it we did. LOL! She was so proud of all her choices when we showed Andy last night. And I was so proud of her. Funny thing is she brought EVERYTHING in .... you guessed it ..... PINK! LOL.

Matt was great. And so easy to please. He pretty much chose all his stuff too. The only problem we encountered was when he decided he really liked these (admittedly very cool) girls gumboots from Cotton on Kids. They are blue with white stars on them. In the end I decided that really they could be unisex and what did it matter? He loves them, so we got them. FANTASTIC.

The only problem this morning with him was trying to get the rugby boots off his feet. As soon as we came home last night they went on, and only came off when he put on his new jammies which have feet in them - yes, way cool. For big kids from The Warehouse! So this morning it was an issue as he wanted to wear them to daycare. And of course play again. With school holidays he doesn't play for another couple of weeks, so he's quite bummed about that!

Chicken news:

They are all in together and seem to be living quite harmoniously. We have worked out a system for feeding and that seems to be working much better. We've got a new feeder and put in some more plants (including a boysonberry bush! Bring on summer!) so its all looking pretty darn cool. We're even getting an egg a day again. I think Dora is laying. So that's great. Only bummer is that we have 6, yes SIX chickens and are only getting 1 egg a day. Hmmmmm, I can see issues here come summer if we're not getting more than one a day by then! LOL.

And me, well I went to bed at 8.30pm last night. Just exhausted again. I have never been so tired for so long since I was pregnant (and before there are any smart comments, NO I'M NOT! LOL). So I'm hoping that I'm just recovering from Andy being away and nothing more.

I am looking forward to catching up with Jo for a walk tomorrow - might give me a bit more energy. And I've decided no more wine at night - for a few days anyway! LOL!

Off to have my hair cut later. Wish me luck. I think I'm gonna take the new Marian Keyes book I brought the other day and start reading it. Bliss.

Just looking out the window right now, theres a rainbow. LOVE LOVE LOVE rainbows and the promise they stand for.

Alrighty, gotta go. I need a cup of tea. LOL. Have a good one!

Don't ya love it when you achieve stuff?

Yesterday was a big day for odd jobs around the house. I cleaned up my scrap storage area and made new labels for things, plus put away a heap of stuff! I can now sit on the couch that is there. LOL! And I packaged up a heap of product to go out to the Fiskars Ambassadors. So much fun. I feel like Father Christmas.

I also got out Matts old clothes for Dan for winter, and put alot of clothes that no longer fit him into boxes for a charity we support. It was good as Poppa and Pene came over for afternoon tea so I could give them those clothes to give to a woman who helps Grandparents who have suddenly become parents of their grandkids when things happen to their children. Imagine that suddenly at 65 you're bringing up young children? Its hard enough now!

We also pulled out all the tomato plants from the garden and got it semi ready for the next lot of veges. Yay. Winter veges.

Plus we tidied our front entrance, swept up all the dirt, put away shoes, you know general tidy stuff.

We also got to do lots more in the chicken area. We hadn't realised that with the hose where it is, it erodes the soil, so we planted some grasses to stop this (also applied for the drip line around the chickens house!), plus we planted more grasses in the middle of the area to stop more erosion (the chickens have dug up all the weeks and its now just bare dirt!) and to give them something else to fossick around in. Plus we planted a boysenberry bush. Yay! Can't wait for that to grow!

We also got rid of some of the topsoil out the front of our place and started to get it ready for planting more grass. Yay.

So at the end of the day we could sit back and go ahhhhhh, great work. LOL! Funny what makes you happy as you get older huh?! LOL.

Today will be achievement on another scale. We're going clothes shopping for the kids. Wish me luck!!!!

Sunday sketch day?

Hmmmm, yes, I've been a bit behind lately. And after my adorable hubby coming home yesterday and doing a demo for Fiskars at The Warehouse Stationary I pretty much collapsed into bed. Yep. Being a solo Mum for two weeks is hard work. I really don't understand how solo Mums do it each and every day for the rest of their lives. Ya know? So I went to bed last night at 6.30pm. I know. Can you believe it? I still can't! The kids went to bed, had their stories read and I promptly followed. So I had 12 hours sleep last night (except for a bit in the middle when someone called from China! Sigh!).

Anyway, I had a great day yesterday before 6.30pm. LOL! My boy had his first ever rugby game. And he was great. Its called ripper rugby cause instead of tackling they have tags they have to rip off each other. Matt was really good at this! He ripped tags off everyone, left right and centre. Including his own team. LOL! But seriously, he did rip lots off the other team which was great. The first time he got the ball he took off for the sideline though! LOL. It was fantastic. I've got a couple of great photos, but I might use them for something else so can't show here just yet. I was soooooooo the proud Mum! Linn even came which was magic. She is so good to our kids. What a blessing to have her in our lives. Andy didn't quite make it. He rang from the airport just as they were going on. Bit of a shame, but that's ok, he'll be there next time.

Then of course I went and did the demo at The Warehouse Stationary. Ben the assistant manager was a huge help, and I got to have a wee chat to Fiona who was there demoing for Cuttlebug. I also got to say hi to another Fiona who I originally met from Scrapcamp a few years back. It was her birthday (HAPPY BIRTHDAY GIRL!) so she was out having a wee shopping spree. Lucky her!

Oh and before I go onto the sketches for this week, check this out. We always have pancakes on Sunday morning and the kids watch sport while they are being cooked. Its the only morning they are allowed to watch tv at this time. This morning, Matt asked for cricket. I kinda thought we're not going to be in luck, but blow me down if there isn't cricket on! We surfed through the channels and there it was. This blew me away. I mean doesn't it blow you away? That you can pretty much say what you want to watch and there it is?! It was only a few short years ago that we only had 2 channels! Seriously!!!! So that's something that really made me go 'wow' this morning. LOL.

Moments that make it all worthwhile

Tonight I'm sitting down having a wine with Linn and Matt comes waltzing out of his bedroom with his megasketcher. I'm feeling a little annoyed. After all its bed time. They should be in bed. But then I ask Matt:

Me: What are you doing buddy?

Matt: I drew this for Daddy.

Me: What is it?

Matt: Its a picture of me with love hearts for Daddy.

OHHHHHHH. Melt your heart moment. Can't wait to show it to Andy.

Still talking about Matt, we have a very exciting weekend planned. He is starting his sporting career. LOL. Well he's gonna play rugby. Its called smallblacks when they are this little, but we are all very excited about it. He has been asking to play for ages, so this should be fun.

Yesterday I decided since it was rubbish day and the kids were at daycare it would be a good time to get rid of some of their toys. You know all that plastic 'cough cough' that just seems to accumulate. So I grabbed a rubbish bag and attacked their room. When I was finished it looked amazing and a whole bag was filled. The kids came home and loved the new look. And funnily enough didn't even notice all the toys that were gone. Whew.

One of the funniest things that happened though was when I showed them their wardrobe. We have been keeping a few things in there that perhaps shouldn't have been and I decided it was shoes and nappies only. They took one look at it and Sarah pronounced 'but Mum thats not how it should look'. LOL! Well actually little lady, this IS how it should look and that untidy mess before was not right. ROFL! You just have to laugh huh?!

As for today, its been good. I've managed to go on a walk, chat with friends, alsorts. Actually when I was having lunch with Jo, there was a fire alarm. It was quite funny sitting at our outside table, knowing that really nothing was wrong and as we were outside we didn't need to go anywhere. The only thing that was wrong, was we'd just finished our lunch and had ordered a wine when the alarm went off. So it meant we didn't have our wine. Sigh. LOL. As the ladies all know us I sneakily asked one of them if they could possibly get our order but she got told off when she went in. Whoops. They are really good to us as we go every week. Its one of those treats that scrapping has introduced me to. A jolly good friend.

Ok, I'm gonna go and sort some stuff. I've been doing that lots this week and still have some new storage to sort some PP into. Thats the plan in the next couple of days. Wish me luck.

Disaster

I went to sleep last night wondering and praying for a group of children in the Tongariro. I woke this morning to hear the disastrous news that 6 children and 1 adult had been killed while canyoning. I felt sadness wash over me. I couldn't believe that something like this could happen to a group of kids here in NZ. Successful, productive kids who had so much to offer. As a mother I think it hits me harder now as I start to think what if it was my children? Its just so incredibly sad.

I think I was also affected as I heard talk all day about why they went, who made the decision to go, etc etc. And while there are many many ways they could have checked weather conditions, or made other decisions, we don't know what happened, and until we do its all hearsay. Its too late now. Blame is not going to bring those kids back. I feel for the company who was running the trip as they will be going through the guilt that it was their fault. How hard would that be? Unbearable.

I also felt sad as I heard talk about banning these types of trips for kids. You see we kiwis well we're brought up on adventure and I really don't think this is the way to go. Our kids need adventure. We need adventure. It teaches us about boundaries, about risk what is and isn't safe. Banning these types of events would be another PC disaster.

I'm also reminded of Kelly Swanson-Roe. It seems like yesterday this talented TV personality went through the same thing, loosing her husband. I've been incredibly intrigued and happy to see her develop on the TV and become the popular personality she is. But imagine having to relive it again through this latest tradgedy?! Unimaginable.

The whole thing just reeks of sadness.

My heartfelt thoughts go out to all involved. I wish we could turn back time, but as we can't, may peace descend on the friends and families of the lost children and teacher. May time go quickly so the pain starts to dull and healing begin.

What to do on a rainy day?

Mondays are always muck around days for us. Most times we'll go do the food shopping, but seeing as we did it yesterday, we had nothing to do today. Match that with the AWFUL (but much needed) rain and you get a family who just wanna hang out together.

I was trying to think of something to do that wouldn't be toooo much hassle, and not too much mess. Hmmmm, kids inside on a wet day?! Yeah right! So instead I went for something fun that would occupy them for a decent amount of time.

A hut. We totally moved the whole lounge around. Turned the couches back to back and threw over a rug with lots of cushions underneath. We even got out the torch so we could read while we were in the hut. Sounds like fun right? Yeah. I thought so too, until our wee climber Dan decided it was better to jump on the roof of said hut and it was game on!

Then this afternoon Abby took the kids out to Chipmunks. A great getaway for a rainy day. I managed to finish off a LO I started last night. I based it on a sketch I did for SBO on Saturday.

I went to a crop today

And it uplifted me again. I didn't sleep well last night so this morning was a bit of a shambles. I was tired, the kids smelt the stress and played on it. I couldn't get things ready. You know. I drove off with a spinning head dying to get out to see my friends. To relax. To know that they would bring me back down to earth with a smile and nod. That we would laugh until we cried and we would eat crap food.

And we did. All of those things.

I even sat there and created a LO. Yep. From start to finish (well pretty much), and that was even with the first hour and a bit wasted due to me sitting there twiddling my thumbs. LOL.

The LO was done using lot of yummy product from SBO. The base is the March Kit. Boy it's nice. But then I added a heap of other product that I also got from SBO.

As you can tell I'm still in love with bling and clocks right now.

Also had a chat today about Scrapbooking. Whats happening with it. What direction its going. I'd love to hear your ideas. Especially how you see it in little ole NZ.

Saturday Sketch Day

Just saying on another post how I can't believe how quickly Saturdays roll around. And yep, here is another one. I hope you've got some fun things planned?!

I'm off to a crop and can't wait. I have absolutely nothing ready eeeeek, so must go sort myself out. But hey, who am I kidding. Do I really go there to crop? Or just hang out with the girls, drink tea, have a laugh! Yeah!

And with mothers day coming up I've designed a great sketch for a card using up lots of scraps. All you have to do is finish that LO you're currently working on ;) to get the scraps. hehehe. Grab your Fiskars Squeeze punch and/or Fiskars ultra shapecutter xpress and circle template and you're done! Easy peasy....

Next is a LO sketch for SBO.

Can you tell from these sketches that when I get 'stuck' I start layering. Paper after paper, this way and that. Never ceases to get a LO done!

I'd like to change the world, but my hands are full right now.....

I was in the shops today with my buddy Jo and she said look at that book and I said, I'd really like to, but my hands are full. It was one of those funny absurd moments that you think yeah, I'd like to change the world, but gee whiz, I can't cause my hands are full. Uhhhh, duh! Maybe I should make that change and drop my bags to have a look. LOL! I mean seriously! So I put my stuff down, looked through the book and promptly paid for it. Then we giggled the rest of the way down the mall.

On closer inspection, its a really cool book with some cute and fun ideas, plus some more serious ones. There are 50 'actions' that anyone could do, anyday, and I just love it. So much in fact I'm gonna RAK it to someone who has a cool idea on how everyone could do something everyday to help save the world. Just leave me a comment and I'll do a draw at the end of the weekend to see who will get a copy.

Update on chooks.....today I put all the chooks in together. I've left the small coop up, but they were all in the big coop. They certainly seemed to survive! The littlies still got chased a little bit, but not nearly so much. And there is certainly a pecking order. Chickenee is the boss of everyone followed by Bob and Dora, then Goldilocks, Blah and very definitely last Pinochio. Its been interesting watching them and I think another few days like this, and we'll be able to remove the fence and let them all live nicely together. Whew.

And I wanted to say thanks for all the support and thoughts about my post yesterday. It was nice to hear I'm not alone in this fight. Even though I do know this, its nice to be reminded.

Today hasn't been the easiest day, but I did find a 30 min period of solitude tonight when I took my latest copy of CK down the back section with a glass of wine and sat in the sun reading my mag sipping my wine. Such peace down there. Even if it was low tide.

And lastly I was doing a post for Fiskars and their BOM prompts and was talking about TV. It got me thinking about things in tv and I remembered Andy had shown the kids the 'goodnight kiwi' the other day, so I went and googled it and found it. Thought I might take you for a wee walk down memory lane.......Goodnight Kiwi.

Baring my soul

Ok, this post is kinda hard to write. Its a little bit toooo out there for me. But I'm struggling with something and talking to many friends, they are too. So I'm hoping that this post might touch a cord with some of you too. Maybe we can even support each other?

I wonder if you've guessed what I'm talking about? Yeah? Weight. My body weight.

Growing up I could eat anything I wanted to, and I did. I was not the best eater and still am not. In fact it was a common joke in my family while I was at university that I lived on McDonalds, chips and chocolate. And while it was a joke, it was also pretty accurate.

Then I turned 23 and something happened in my body which meant I couldn't do that anymore. Suddenly I had to watch what I ate a little more, but it wasn't toooo bad cause I could exercise alot. And I did. I would walk in the morning before work, run at lunchtime then go to the gym in the evening. Sounds like I didn't have much of a social life, LOL, but that wasn't too bad either ;)

Then as I grew older still it became a little more harder, but I was doing major exercise in the form of Ironman and Coast to Coast with other littler, but still long endurance events. It meant I could eat sooooo much cause I needed to to keep my body fueled.

Then I had children. And at first, two at once. My time was not my own anymore. And bringing up 2 littlies straight up was difficult. About the same time I discovered scrapbooking and that became my priority instead of exercise and I realise now that I've used kids as an excuse to not exercising.

The funny thing is I really miss it. I've had moments when I would 'get back into it' for a while. I remember running alot with the twins. 25 kgs of buggy and 25 kgs of kids meant it was hard work, but I did it....for a while.

During this time I was still eating like I was doing the 2+ hours of exercise a day I used to do. Yep you get it, do the maths and it doesn't add up. LOL.

So I find myself 4.5 years and one more baby later the heaviest I've ever been. And I just don't seem to have the motivation to stop shoveling stuff into my mouth.

Even today, talking to a friend who is struggling with the same issues, we sat down, had a wonderful meal for lunch of salad from the garden with chicken. Totally good for us. I felt wonderful. Then promptly went and ordered Pizza for dinner. Sigh.

Due to all my 'training' I know the rules. I know what is and isn't good for me. I know how much exercise I need to do, I KNOW. So why can't I stop eating?

What confuses me even more is that I'm probably the happiest I've been in my life. Seriously life is good. So I can't even apply that theory that I eat when I'm down.

Anyway, I really, really want to loose the 20kgs that I've gained somewhere along the last 4.5 years. So I'm hoping that by putting it out there like this, I can actually make it happen. Make it real. And share this fight I'm having with myself.

China

We made a decision a couple of years ago that we wanted to give our children world experience in the form of travel to different and exotic countries. We want them to know that there is more in this world than a typical Kiwi. That there are different cultures, traditions and the way people look and do things. That this is all 'normal' and good. That we are really one big family of 'the world'.

Then when Sir Edmond Hillary died we heard his son Peter talking at the funeral about how he was dragged off every school holidays to somewhere new and exciting. That his father always had trips on the go. We decided then that the kids were now at that age where we could start doing these trips.

And we decided China would be it. China seemed like the perfect place for our first trip. Both Andy and I have been there so we 'know' it and understand a little about the culture, food and how to get things done. Plus we actually know how to get around. Andy in particular knows most of the main cities and so it won't be so daunting for us as adults and we can have our first experience somewhere that is totally different to NZ, but also in a safe environment that we feel comfortable in.

So we're going. Later this year. We're in the planning stages now and its exciting cause the kids will get to see where Daddy works. We have also been talking alot about the food, animals, and things we see on the streets, or around the country. The kids are fascinated by it and its been really eye opening to see the interest already.

We've had several comments about 'oh they're too young, they'll never remember anything'. But for us its not about memories as such. More about the experience, something that they will grow up with. And hopefully then have a more open mind. More open to different ideas, different people. You know?

Anyway, as part of all this we were talking about the Giant Pandas of China so I googled them and found lots of pictures. But the most amazing site here which shows real live Giant Pandas in a zoo. The other day we saw them wandering around their enclosure, today we saw them eating. The kids LOVE it. And I thought other kids might like it to. So there ya go. Take a look. Its cool!
